Off the tourist track
Off the tourist track
Take time out from all the great tourist activities, take a few trips away from the coastal resorts, and see how the people of Cyprus live when they are not involved in the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Visit a few villages where the village square still form the pivotal point of the village; wander around and experience the real Cypriot way of life.
In villages such as Episkopi and Kathikas people go about their daily lives at a leisurely pace and they welcome visitors with a smile. You can buy local produce from them as well as their speciality arts and crafts. Villages such as these have an old-world charm that soothe and welcome you to visit again.
Episkopi village is fascinating as it is nestled against a steep rock face and the traditional structure of the village is nearly unchanged by modern life. You will see winding roads where donkeys carry crops and the villagers happily follow a lifestyle most of us know nothing about. Sit down at a local taverna and share a meal with the villagers and you will discover a wonderful community spirit where you see a group of elderly men play cards or backgammon and debate the issues of the world. The overlaying feeling you take away with you from any of these traditional villages will be one of warmth, much laughter and camaraderie.
